A 39-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries June 10 when an inert-type practice grenade detonated after its pin was removed or tampered with, according to the Hightstown Police Department.

Police were sent to the rental office of the Deerfield/Westerlea Arms apartment complex on Westerlea Avenue at 11:40 a.m. in response to a call for a woman with severe stomach pain.

Police determined that she was injured after the pin was removed or tampered with on the practice grenade and it detonated. Robbinsville EMS (emergency medical services) arrived and transported her to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, police said.

Hightstown police officers evacuated the area as a precautionary measure. The New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad, the Hightstown Fire Department and the Hightstown First Aid Squad were sent to stand by at the scene until it was rendered safe.

The New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad rendered the scene safe. They determined that the practice grenade still had a fuse in it that caused the detonation when the pin was removed or tampered with, police said.

There were no other injuries.
