Work begins next month on the replacement of the Hopewell-Princeton Road [Carter Road] bridge over the Bedens Brook.

Mercer County has around Aug. 15 as the time period replacement work begins on the bridge in Hopewell Township and barring any delays it is expected to take about nine months to complete.

Hopewell-Princeton Road, where the bridge is located over Bedens Brook, has two single lanes that connects to Princeton Avenue in Hopewell Borough or Carter Road heading to Princeton or Lawrence Township.

Residents using the roadway for example to go to Princeton or going to Hopewell from Princeton will still be able to drive on the road during construction with alternating traffic controls. A temporary bridge will be utilized to maintain traffic.

Julie Willmot, spokesperson for Mercer County, previously said the bridge is “structurally deficient,” which is the reason for the bridge replacement.

The bridge’s load carrying capacity with the fascia beams during construction will be reduced.

The replacement bridge will have 11-foot travel lanes, two six-foot shoulders and a single five-foot sidewalk.

There will be pavement reconstruction, an installation of guide rails, drainage construction, concrete sidewalk and curbs, and prior to the replacement the demolition and removal of the existing bridge.
