Vacant apartment fire under investigation

The cause of a fire in a vacant first-floor apartment at 41 Spring St. on Oct. 9 is under investigation, according to Princeton fire officials.

The fire, which began in a garbage container in the apartment, was reported at 8:15 p.m., said Princeton Fire Official Frank D’Amore. Multiple callers contacted 911 to report the fire.

A sprinkler system in the apartment building was activated and kept the fire in check until the Princeton Fire Department arrived, D’Amore said. The fire did not spread beyond the container in the apartment, which was undergoing renovation.

The four-story apartment building, which is on the corner of Spring Street and South Tulane Street, was evacuated while firefighters extinguished the fire.

Hunter Klein, who lives in an apartment on the third floor, said he heard someone outside shouting to call 911 to report a fire.

“I thought it was in another building,” Klein said. “I opened the door and I walked to the stairs and I smelled smoke.” He continued down the stairs and left the building.

Klein continued down the stairs and left the building. Other residents stood across the street from the building for more than an hour before they were permitted to go back inside.

There were no injuries to the residents or firefighters, D’Amore said.
