Yellow rectangular rapid flashing beacons will be installed at 12 crosswalk locations on Brunswick Pike, between Lake Drive and the Brunswick Circle.

Lawrence Township received a $500,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Local Transportation Projects Fund program for the Brunswick Pike Pedestrian Safety Improvements project.

The township applied for a grant to install the pedestrian-activated beacons at the crosswalks, with the exception of the crosswalk at Cherry Tree Lane. There is a traffic signal at that intersection.

The pedestrian-activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons are intended to alert motorists to the presence of pedestrians who want to cross Brunswick Pike.

The project is expected to be completed by fall 2025, township officials said.

Brunswick Pike has undergone streetscape improvements along a one-mile stretch, between Lake Drive and the Brunswick Circle. It is part of a beautification project that has been in the works for nearly 20 years.

Decorative cobblestone pavers have been installed at the intersections of side streets and Brunswick Pike. New sidewalks have been installed on the west side of Brunswick Pike.

Cobblestone pavers also have been put in place at each of the landscaped grass medians that divide Brunswick Pike into two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes. Trees have been planted in the median.

The streetscape project helps to link the residential and commercial uses along Brunswick Pike, township officials said.

The goal of the streetscape improvements is to make the Brunswick Pike corridor more pedestrian-friendly, especially for the senior citizens who live in the Heritage Village at Lawrence apartment building on the corner of Brunswick Pike and Cherry Tree Lane.

Lawrence Township officials also hope that the streetscape improvement project will spur economic and commercial redevelopment along that stretch of Brunswick Pike.
