Hopewell Township is supporting the county’s efforts to reduce the speed limit from 45 miles per hour (mph) to 35 mph on entire length of Pennington-Harbourton Road to Route 31 and establish a four-way stop at an intersection on the roadway.

The Hopewell Township Committee’s support for the county’s ordinances addresses traffic safety issues such as speeding at the intersections on the roadway and the road itself raised by residents and members of the governing body.

Two county ordinances would reduce the speed limit the full length of Pennington-Harbourton Road from the intersection of Trenton-Harbourton Road to the intersection of Route 31 and establish a four-way stop at the intersection of Pennington-Harbourton Road, Burd Road and Scotch Road.

“We have been working really hard with our partners at the county to get this done,” Mayor Courtney Peters-Manning said at the Township Committee meeting on Dec. 2.

“As we all know there was a fatal motorcycle accident at that intersection and there has been advocacy from the family members and also the community to put a four-way stop there. The crash data supports it, and the county has been great partners in working with us to both lower the speed limit and put in a four-way stop.”

In order to proceed with the two ordinances, the county asked the township to pass resolutions in support of the two ordinances, according to Township Administrator George Snyder.

“One thing I want to emphasis here is the fact that the speed limit is lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph along the entire stretch between Trenton-Harbourton and Route 31 so that is a fairly long stretch of road,” Committeeman Michael Ruger said.

“I know I have heard from neighbors who live on that road, full disclosure my mother lives on it as well, they have had concerns about speed traffic, so I am very happy to see that the speed limit is just not going to be lowered from Scotch Road to Route 31 but for the entire length.”
