Man loses $169,530 in fake police scam

Princeton Police Department detectives are investigating an incident in which a resident lost $169,530.01 after being contacted by fake law enforcement officers who claimed they were investigating crimes of theft of identity and international drug trafficking.

The victim told police on March 8 that they had been contacted over the past month by individuals who claimed to be representatives of the New Jersey State Police.

One of the suspects convinced the victim to send money in order to protect the victim from seizure, due to the “ongoing investigation,” police said.

The victim purchased $169,530.01 worth of gold coins, which were provided to the suspects. The identity of the suspects is not known at this time, police said.
