Silent films evoke scenes of a bygone era. In our bustling world of sound and visual effects, we can hardly imagine a time when technology was so rudimentary that movies comprised only black and white images with no sound at all.

One of the important features of the silent-film era was the organ and piano music that brought these movies to life.

On March 29, 150 piano students from throughout central New Jersey will recreate the silent film experience at the Bridgewater AMC in Bridgewater. Students of all ages and levels will provide the soundtrack to classic films starring Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

The community event is sponsored by the New School for Music Study (NSMS), a local community piano school, and is made possible by funding from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

“It is truly amazing to see how the music makes these historic films come alive,” said NSMS Administrative Director Dr. Rebecca Pennington. “They are engaging and appealing to audience members of all ages and it is a great way to showcase piano students in live performance.”

Join the joyous juxtaposition of movies and music from 12:45-7:30 p.m. on March 29 in Bridgewater. Audience members can choose to see one film or the full day of movies. The event is suitable for all ages. For more information contact sfc@nsmspiano.org.
