The Princeton Council awarded a $1.7 million contract to Lucas brothers Inc. for improvements to Alexander Street, Dickinson Street and University Place.

Three contractors submitted bids that ranged from Lucas Brothers Inc.’s low bid of $1.7 million to $2.05 million submitted by Earle Asphalt Co. Lucas Brothers Inc.’s bid was deemed to be the lowest responsible and responsive bidder.

The cost will be offset by a New Jersey Department of Transportation Municipal Aid grant in the amount of $724,820, officials said.

Work on Alexander Street includes resurfacing, sidewalks repairs and curb ramp replacements to conform with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), between Mercer Street and College Road.

Resurfacing, sidewalk repairs and ADA curb ramp replacements will be made on University Place, between Nassau Street and the Berlind Theater crosswalk.

Roadway signage and pavement markings that include sharrow markings – share the road with bicyclists – also will be made on University Place.

Modifications will be made to the intersection of College Road and University Place to reduce the crosswalk lengths for pedestrian safety.

Lastly, brick crosswalks will be removed and replaced with high visibility crosswalk striping.

The project calls for the full reconstruction of the road, curb, sidewalks and sanitary sewer on Dickinson Street.
