A scammer attempted to list and sell a home belonging to a victim through a real estate broker in an incident of identity theft and fraud that was reported April 11, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.
The victim, who had returned home from vacation, reported receiving a letter in the mail from Coldwell Banker Realty in Princeton, advising that the victim’s property had been listed for sale with the agency, police said.
The letter from the real estate agency advised that the person who listed the property for sale had claimed to be the owner, police said. The person could not provide proof of identity, so the listing was removed.
Coldwell Banker also reported receiving a call from a person who expressed interest in purchasing the property. Realizing it was a scam, the real estate agency halted any further action, police said.
