Mayor Debbie Walker pledged on May 5 to create a cleaner community by joining the Greatest American Cleanup in time for America’s 250th Birthday on July 4.
New Jersey Clean Communities Council President Linda Doherty thanked Walker for her support leading Old Bridge “in this historic nationwide event.”
“By taking this pledge,” she said, “your community joins thousands of others across the country committee to reducing litter, promoting environmental stewardship, and celebrating America’s 250th birthday through action.
“Thank you for your continued leadership and partnership in keeping New Jersey beautiful.”
All can join the challenge to reach 25 million pieces by July 4. Text LITTER to 475-500-8569 to get reminders to pick up litter in the community.
Mayor Walker’s Clean Team was already out and about making the community cleaner on May 9.
Members of the Old Bridge High School Environmental Club, Rays of Hope Youth Group, Old Bridge High School JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) Drill Team, and McDivitt School K-Kids Club picked up over 100 bags of trash and bulk items from three local roadways and one township park.
The Old Bridge Clean Communities Program, Mayor Walker’s Clean Team, works closely with the municipal government, schools, neighborhood committees and various local nonprofit groups to keep Old Bridge clean through public education and litter removal projects. Annual activities include park cleanups, beachfront cleanups, and local roads. They also host special events such as Earth Day, International Coastal Cleanup Day, Old Bridge Day and education programs throughout the schools.
Picking up litter is more than just a way of beautifying roads in town. They are trying to have residents take responsibility for their actions and take pride in their environment. Working for The Mayor’s Clean Team is a win-win for everyone involved. Local groups are raising money for their cause, roadways are getting cleaned and most importantly, they are all working together as a community.Â
