Somerset County is seeking volunteers for the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, with a special need for bilingual volunteers. The program helps older adults and residents with low to moderate incomes access to free and reliable tax preparation services.

“Every year, our Tax-Aide volunteers make a real difference in the lives of Somerset County residents. Their dedication helps to navigate an often stressful process with confidence and dignity,” said Commissioner Elizabeth Graner, liaison to Somerset County Volunteer Services. “As our community continues to grow, more volunteers are vital in ensuring that residents feel supported. I encourage anyone who enjoys helping others to consider joining this dedicated team of professionals.”

During the 2025 tax season, 60 Somerset County Tax-Aide volunteers completed 2,614 tax returns. Volunteers also helped residents complete 790 PAS-1 forms, resulting in an estimated $4 million returned to Somerset County households.

“As a Tax-Aide volunteer, you’ll receive training on Federal and NJ State tax law, learn new skills, and connect with people in your community, all while giving back,” said Sabrina Ellis, an AARP Tax-Aide Counselor in Somerset County. “There’s a variety of volunteer roles at six sites in Somerset County. You do not need a tax or financial background. Whatever your skill set, there’s a role for you.”

Volunteers are needed in different capacities, such as tax preparers and client facilitators. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed to help residents who speak other languages feel informed throughout the tax preparation process. Somerset County has six Tax-Aide locations: Montgomery, Bridgewater, Manville, Somerville, Franklin, and Green Brook.

Residents interested in volunteering for the 2026 tax season should complete their volunteer application by September 1, 2026, to ensure they can finish all required steps. This includes the Somerset County Volunteer Services application, the AARP application, and a background check, all of which must be completed before training begins.
