Police are investigating an attempted fraud after a victim was contacted by a caller who pretended to work for the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 14, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.

The caller told the victim that she was wanted on a warrant for $3,000 for skipping jury duty. She was told to meet the caller in Trenton and to pay the bail in cash for the warrant to be dismissed.

She was told that the location of the meeting would not be disclosed until she was in her vehicle. She was transferred to another suspect who continued to tell her that she needed to meet in person to resolve the warrant, police said.

When she told the caller that she was aware that it was an attempted fraud, the caller became angry and threatened her physical harm. He also made statements about her family.

The incident remains under investigation.
