A 12-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on him as he was playing in his back yard on Eldridge Avenue on Oct. 14, according to the Lawrence Township Police Department.

Gusty winds caused the tree to fall on the boy, who was playing with a friend around noon, police said.

Police officers freed the boy from underneath the tree and began CPR. He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he later died.

The Lawrence Township Public Schools has arranged for counselors to be available to students and staff, police said. Therapy dogs and members of the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition also will be available.

The boy was in seventh grade at the Lawrence Middle School. He had previously attended the Eldridge Park School and the Lawrence Intermediate School, school district officials said.

The incident is being investigated by the Lawrence Township Police Department and the Mercer County Homicide Task Force.
