Construction on the academic commons, which is the former space of the school library, and the construction on the new main office began earlier this year during spring break of the 2023-24 school year with students and staff out of the building.

The academic commons and new main office, which will also house the new Nurse’s Office, were the first constructed referendum projects because the area size for removing asbestos was smaller than the other projects and could be done within spring break, school officials said.

A satellite main office has been established at the Cranbury School referred to as “Main Office Jr.” by school administration and is still between the rock and the gymnasium.

Additionally, a satellite library had been established in a school classroom during the previous school year in preparation for the construction. The school library will stay in the classroom until the academic commons’ construction is complete.

The Cranbury School has also partnered with the Cranbury Public Library, so the students have been able to go to the public library to do book exchanges.

Once complete, bookshelves will line the academic commons and will feature flexible makerspace areas. The administration hopes to fit a class or two classes within the space.

Coming into the 2024-25 school year, Cranbury School’s new kitchen was complete and has been in use since the start of the year. The parking lot was paved with a temporary coat and lined for the school year, the administration said.

With the school’s auditorium construction there is a safety wall that is in place inside the school to separate students and staff from the construction for their safety and the corridors outside the auditorium are back to school standards, according to the school’s latest construction newsletter.

The auditorium construction is expected throughout this school year and the 2025-26 school year.
