The Bordentown Township Police Department is rallying around one of its own, retired Sgt. Wayne Lebak.
Lebak suffered an injury that required doctors to amputate his leg. He recently received a prosthetic device and has begun his journey to re-acclimate himself to his newfound daily life, according to a post through the Bordentown Township Police Department.
The department is hosting a cornhole tournament fundraiser to raise funds to aid in Lebak’s recovery.
“Even through all this, Wayne has remained devoted to serving others, while requesting to remain as police chaplain.”
Lebak was hired by the Bordentown Township Police Department in August 1995. He is a lifelong Bordentown area resident. He served honorably in the police department until he retired at the rank of sergeant in September 2014. During the course of his 25-year career, Lebak was a voice of wisdom and reason, and was a friend to all he met. He was a mentor to young officers as a field training officer and also served as a police chaplain.
Lebak is devoted to his faith and serves as a pastor at the Celebration Community Church (CCC) in Bordentown. He had started attending the Jerusalem Christian Church, which is now the CCC, in 1981 with his parents, according to the church’s website.
In 2005, Lebak was ordained as a pastor and after retirement, he began to serve the church full time. In 2015, he was installed as the lead paster at CCC.

Lebak loved serving the community so much that he rejoined the police department as a special officer after his retirement.
“Wayne is such a great human being who has tirelessly devoted himself to others, that it is only right that we reciprocally come together to support him in his time of need,” the post continued. “We recognize that no man is perfect, and although Wayne is a Dallas Cowboys fan, we still have found the love in our hearts to put that aside and come together in his name.”
The cornhole tournament will begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Bordentown Elks No. 2085 Lodge, 11 Amboy Road. The day will be filled with fun, food and competition in Lebak’s honor.
