East Windsor and Hightstown voters elect school board members

East Windsor and Hightstown Borough voters returned incumbent school board members Jenna Drake, Christina “Tina” Lands and Kavitha Madhuri Velagapudi to the East Windsor Regional School District Board of Education in the Nov. 5 general election.

Voters also chose Robert Laverty to fill out an unexpired one-year term on the school board, defeating incumbent school board member Paula Calia. She was appointed in January to replace Bernard Fouignes, who had resigned.

Of the nine seats on the East Windsor Regional School District Board of Education, seven are set aside for East Windsor Township residents and two are earmarked for Hightstown Borough residents.

Lands and Velagapudi, who will serve three-year terms on the school board, ran unopposed for re-election. They represent East Windsor Township on the school board.

Drake ran unopposed for re-election. She represents Hightstown Borough on the school board. She will serve a three-year term.

Laverty will represent East Windsor Township on the school board. He joined the school board in 2001 and served for more than 20 years, with some breaks in between his service on the school board.

According to unofficial vote tallies released by the Mercer County Clerk’s Office, Velagapudi received 6,872 votes and Lands received 6,630 votes.

Drake got 1,688 votes.

Laverty earned 5,803 votes and Calia received 3,840 votes.

The vote tallies are unofficial until the Mercer County Clerk’s Office certifies them later this month. The vote tallies include early voting, vote-by-mail ballots and Election Day voting.
