The return of two incumbent Hightstown Borough Council members has been confirmed by Hightstown Borough voters.

Incumbent Borough Council members Jeet Gulati and Frederick Montferrat, both Democrats, were re-elected to three-year terms on the governing body in the Nov. 5 general election.

Montferrat was the top vote-getter with 1,620 votes and Gulati received 1,571 votes, according to the official vote tally released by the Mercer County Clerk’s Office on Nov. 21. A total of 3,191 votes were cast.

The final vote tally includes early voting, Election Day voting, mail-in ballots and provisional ballots.

Montferrat was re-elected to his second full, three-year term. He had been appointed to fill out an unexpired term and then was elected to his first full term.

Montferrat said he would like to work on the rug mill redevelopment project on Bank Street and the redevelopment of the Wells Fargo bank property on Main Street.

Gulati, who was appointed to fill an unexpired term, will begin his first full term.

During his next term on the Borough Council, Gulati said he wants to focus on the municipal budget. He said he would like to make a dent in bringing the budget under control, but acknowledged that it is easier said than done.

Gulati said there are many unknowns about the redevelopment of the rug mill property and the Wells Fargo bank property, so it is hard to say what he would do. The goal is to find a partner that is committed to Hightstown Borough.
