Dozens of people were left homeless after a fire raced through a building at the American Way condominium complex on Avon Drive, off Probasco Road, on June 10, according to the East Windsor Police Department.
Police officers were dispatched to investigate a reported fire in Building K at 4:28 p.m. When the first police officers arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor on the north end of the building.
Police evacuated all of the residents from Building K. There were no reported injuries.
Each of the 24 condominium units suffered smoke, water or fire damage. The entire building was deemed uninhabitable. Nearly 50 residents were displaced by the fire.
Shortly after police and firefighters arrived, flames were reported to be burning through the roof, according to published reports on the midjersey.news website. About two-thirds of the roof eventually burned off.
The initial fire call was elevated to three alarms to bring in additional firefighters and fire trucks from surrounding towns, published reports said.
The two East Windsor volunteer fire companies were assisted by fire companies from Hightstown, Cranbury, West Windsor, Robbinsville, Plainsboro, Hamilton, Lawrence, Ewing, Monroe, Millstone, Manalapan, Upper Freehold, North Brunswick and Howell townships.
Fire coordinators from Mercer and Monmouth counties also responded.
Capital Health paramedics and ambulances, along with the Hightstown First Aid Squad and the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, stood by.
Mercer County Canteen 22, which provides water and refreshments to firefighters, also was on hand.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the East Windsor Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. The fire is not believed to be suspicious.
