Veterans Day officially takes place each year on Nov. 11. The day began initially as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, and was dedicated to those who fought.

After Nov. 11 was made a federal holiday, it evolved into Veterans Day recognizing and honoring all veterans in all of the country’s wars and the servicemen and servicewomen currently serving in America’s military.

Every year, municipalities across the state and country hold various events such as ceremonies and parades to recognize the service of veterans. A national ceremony on Veterans Day occurs at Arlington National Cemetery, where traditionally the president lays a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.
