New Jersey Transit has introduced an interim River LINE weekday schedule that adds supplemental bus service at six high-ridership stations.

The move was made to provide customers with additional travel options during weekday morning and afternoon peak hours, from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The new temporary schedule and additional bus service began on Aug. 12, after NJ Transit President and CEO Kevin S. Corbett visited the River LINE maintenance facility in Camden.

The River LINE light-rail vehicles that run from Trenton to Camden are one-of-a-kind models that were custom-built more than 20 years ago to share the tracks with Conrail freight trains. The delivery of needed custom replacement APUs (Auxiliary Power Units) has been delayed longer than anticipated because of manufacturing and supply chain issues, according to NJ Transit.

“The recent performance on the River LINE has not been acceptable and we apologize to our customers for their experience,” Corbett said. “This interim measure is part of a broader, long-term commitment and action plan that continues holding our contract operator accountable to make the necessary vehicle upgrades and restore the reliable and predictable service our customers expect and deserve.”

The River LINE will continue to operate every 30 minutes from all stations throughout weekday service, with supplemental buses operated by Academy Bus Company during the morning and peak periods only at the following six stations: Trenton, Florence, Burlington Towne Center, Riverside, Palmyra and the Walter Rand Transportation Center.

The buses will not serve intermediate stations. Customers with an origin or destination of a station not served by a bus will be accommodated by the next River LINE train.
