Unidentified drone sightings that have hit communities across the state have also been reported in Hopewell Valley.

The Hopewell Township Police Department (HTP) stated “they are aware of the ongoing statewide issue of drone sightings and that through briefings from state and federal law enforcement partners the police department was informed there is no threat to public at this time,” according to a release to the public on Dec. 10.

“Our officers remain vigilant and are reporting any and all sightings to our state and federal law enforcement partners. We will continue these investigative efforts as we work towards a resolution.

“The safety of our community is our top priority.”

The department is seeking the public’s help in reporting any sightings by asking the public to capture any images or videos. HTP noted that the drones appear at times in clusters and are large in size.

People reporting sightings can do so to the FBI and Hopewell Township Police Department tip line.

Concerns about the unauthorized drones has been raised by residents along with local, state and federal officials.

The FBI has opened an investigation into the drone sightings and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has imposed drone flight restrictions over U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County and Trump International Gulf Club in Bedminster.

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker shared a letter on X written from his office to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Dec. 10.

“…I recognize the need to maintain operational security of ongoing investigations and that this situation requires complex interagency coordination,” Booker wrote. “However, there is a growing sense of uncertainty and urgency across the state – from constituents and local officials alike – despite assurances that the drones pose no known threats to public safety. As such, I urge you to share any relevant information about these drone sightings with the public.

“Without transparency, I believe that rumors, fear, and misinformation will continue to spread.”

Booker is requesting that the FAA, FBI, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security provide a briefing to municipal and county officials on the current situation.
