The Route 206 project has seemingly stalled.

That’s how township officials are looking at it, according to Mayor John Ciccarelli in his Ask the Mayor report on March 19.

“… Based on lack of equipment on site, lack of construction work,” he said, noting they have reached out to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on a number of occasions and have yet to receive any feedback.

Now that they have rolled into spring and the anticipation of warmer weather, officials would like to receive an update on the status of the job.

“Typically, no news is good news, but in this case, I don’t feel that way,” Ciccarelli said. “No news is not good news [in this instance] now that the weather has broken.”

The last update of the Route 206 Doctors Way to Valley Road project is posted as of Feb. 27 on the NJDOT website.

Route 206 is being widened to two travel lanes in each direction within the project limits beginning south of the Doctors Way intersection and ending approximately one half mile north of the Valley Road intersection.

Scheduled completion is fall 2026, according to the website.

Project Details

The $42 million contract includes construction of multiple operational, safety and state-of-good-repair improvements for all highway users.

  • Widening the highway to two travel lanes in each direction, divided by a center median concrete barrier.
  • Constructing jughandles for U-Turn movements at Triangle Road, Valley Road, and near Camplain Road.
  • Realigning the highway throughout the project limits.
  • Re-grading Falcon Road to match new grades of Route 206. Falcon Road will be temporarily closed and detoured. The detour will utilize Opie Road and will not affect traffic on Route 206.
  • Replacing a culvert on Route 206 near Valley Road and building a new bridge over a tributary to Royce Brook to connect Valley Road to Route 206.
  • Creating drainage basins within the new jughandles and at other locations.
  • Upgrading lighting throughout the project limits.
  • Upgrading traffic and pedestrian signals throughout the project limits.
  • Building a noise wall (completed) along Route 206 southbound between Farm Road and Doctors Way.

Ciccarelli noted the project is now being completed by the bonding company, Berkley Surety.

“Regardless who their sub is … Berkley is responsible for completing the job and any equipment that got pulled from the site would have to be done with Berkley’s knowledge,” the mayor said.
