“During Black History Month, we celebrate the many achievements and vast contributions of African Americans to the economic, spiritual, political, and cultural development of both our nation and our community,” the proclamation continues.

“The 2025 theme of Black History Month ‘African Americans and Labor,’ highlights and celebrates the various and impactful ways that work and working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary – share common ground with the collective experiences of Black people.

“The observance of Black History Month reminds us of the continued need to mitigate racism and build a harmonious community,” Ciccarelli read.

“Hillsborough Township continues to work toward becoming a more inclusive community wherein all people are respected and recognized for their contributions and potential contributions to our community, state, country, and world.”

Students from the Hillsborough High School’s Black Student Union were on hand to accept the proclamation and said they were grateful for the opportunity.

Members said the Black Student Union focuses on professional development, community outreach and academic development.

“At the Black Student Union, we work to educate our members on different parts of Black history, what they can do in the workforce, how they can use their identity and strengthen their mindset, the way they interact with the world, the way they attack challenges and much, much more,” one student said.

“We love being in a town like this and we love that we can always recognize these things and we can always come together and celebrate them.”
