Greater Media Newspapers, the publisher of 10 weekly newspapers including the Atlanticville and the News Transcript, is under contract to be sold to a Philadelphia area businessman.

Manalapan-based Greater Media Newspapers will become part of the Newspaper Media Group, a catalog of newspapers assembled by Richard Donnelly, chief executive officer of Donnelly Distribution and a Philadelphia native. A purchase price was not announced, said Ben Cannizzaro, Greater Media Newspapers’ publisher and general manager.

In the past four months, Donnelly has acquired Packet Media, publisher of the Princeton Packet and four other publications, and Broad Street Media, which owns more than a dozen community newspapers in southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Last week, Donnelly purchased the Sun community weekly newspapers in central and southern New Jersey.

“Together with these entities, we are going to bring back newspapers to reflect the past when people read newspapers,” said Donnelly in a statement.

The Greater Media Newspapers purchase will be finalized in mid-September, Donnelly said. Greater Media owns the Atlanticville, the Examiner, the Hub, the Independent, the News Transcript, the Suburban, the Tri-Town News, and the Sentinel newspapers for East Brunswick, Edison/Metuchen and North/South Brunswick.

“Broad Street Media has a strong foothold in the community newspaper field,” Perry Corsetti, publisher of Broad Street Media, in a statement. “I’m a firm believer that this media outlet will flourish. Now with the acquisition of the Sun and Greater Media Newspapers our footprint has expanded exponentially.”

Once the purchase is complete, Newspaper Media Group will have nearly three dozen newspapers.
