Hopewell Township Patrol Officer Marissa McCallum joined others in donating hair to make wigs for children suffering hair loss during the Timberlane Middle School’s (TMS) Cutting Hair Because We Care event on March 18.
McCallum donated 11 inches of her hair, which is going to support children affected by cancer, alopecia, and other disorders, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.
In TMS’s Cutting Hair Because We Care, students could donate hair for Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids, an organization providing wigs and support services at no charge to children and young adults experiencing hair loss or participate in St. Baldrick’s Foundation annual head-shaving event.
For St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event volunteers or “shavees” as they call them try to get pledges in exchange for shaving their heads for the fundraiser. Team Timberlane raised more than $28,000 in the event.
The fundraiser supports the foundation, which raises money for childhood cancer research and is in its 25th year. St. Baldrick’s has been able to provide $356 million in grants to fund research.
According to the organization, one of every five children that are diagnosed with cancer will not survive.
