Princeton officials have applied for a state grant to make improvements to North Harrison Street, between Nassau Street and Franklin Avenue.

The Princeton Council approved submitting the grant application to the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (NJDOT) Municipal Aid program at its June 24 meeting. The town applies annually for grants under the program.

Municipal Engineer Deanna Stockton said Harrison Street already is a subject of a corridor study, from the West Windsor Township border to Route 206. The study report is expected to be presented to the Princeton Council later in the summer or in the fall.

But in the meantime, the town has an “emergent” issue with the pavement on North Harrison Street, Stockton told the Princeton Council.

“We have an outstanding need to do pavement repairs on North Harrison Street, so the thinking is to move ahead with a project to resurface that area,” Stockton said.

The NJDOT grant would pay for widening the sidewalks and reducing the travel lanes because of the crash history of the area, mainly due to speeding vehicles, she said.

“A lot of the work will be (geared toward) pedestrian safety and traffic calming. We can wrap it up in the grant application,” Stockton said.

Princeton officials are expected to find out whether the grant has been approved in November.
