A 35-year-old Bridgeton man will be sentenced in January 2027 after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated sexual assault in Mercer County Superior Court on Sept. 10, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
The plea agreement recommends a 20-year sentence in state prison for Alex Torres-Lopez, with all 20 years to be served without parole eligibility under the Jessica Lunsford Act. The law was named after a 9-year-old Florida girl who was kidnapped and murdered by a registered sex offender. The New Jersey version of the law was adopted in 2014.
Torres-Lopez also will be required to undergo an evaluation at the state Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenal. He will be subject to parole supervision for life. He will have to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law. The law was named for Megan Kanka, who was raped and murdered by a neighbor who had a hidden record of sex offenses against children in 1994. The 7-year-old girl lived in Hamilton Township.
In January 2026, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office’s Special Victims Unit received information from Trenton police that a 12-year-old girl who lived in Trenton had been the victim of a sexual assault. An investigation identified Torres-Lopez as a suspect.
The investigation revealed that Torres-Lopez met the girl on the Snapchat and Roblox social media platforms. He met the girl several times in the fall of 2025 in Trenton and engaged in sexual intercourse with her. It was also discovered that he had the girl send him pornographic images and videos of herself.
