A Hopewell Township resident lost $2,686 that she spent on supplies and gift cards after being contacted by a scammer who claimed to be her supervisor at work in an incident of fraud that was reported on Aug. 15, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.
The victim received a text message from an unknown person who claimed to be the victim’s supervisor, police said. The alleged supervisor asked the victim to buy gift cards, Apple Airpods, notebooks and pens.
Once the victim completed the purchases and provided the alleged supervisor with codes to access the money on the gift cards, the person withdrew the money and stopped messaging her, police said.
It was later determined that the person who had been messaging the victim was impersonating the victim’s supervisor.
