A Cranbury Road home suffered extensive damage from a fire that began in the basement and spread throughout the house on June 30, according to the West Windsor Police Department.

Firefighters from West Windsor Township and surrounding towns responded to the scene to battle the blaze. It took about two hours to place the fire under control, police said.

The West Windsor Police Department’s drone unit helped firefighters by looking for hot spots, or hidden pockets of fire. The fire was deemed to be fully extinguished – including hot spots – after four hours, police said.

Cranbury Road was closed off between Millstone Road and Sunnydale Road for nearly three hours while firefighters battled the flames, police said.

The investigation revealed that the fire began in the basement. The cause of the fire has been deemed undetermined/non-suspicious, pending further investigation.

Fire departments from Princeton, Plainsboro Township, East Windsor Township, Hamilton Township and Lawrence Township responded to the fire to assist the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. and the Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Co., police said.

The Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad also responded.

West Windsor Police Chief Robert Garofalo thanked the first responders for working together during – especially challenging hot and humid conditions – to put out the fire.
