A 39-year-old Old Bridge man was charged with third-degree attempt to endanger the welfare of a child, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera, Chief Thomas J. Montagna of the Old Bridge Police Department, and Chief Daniel Plumacker of the Sayreville Police Department.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit with assistance from the Old Bridge and Sayreville police departments arrested Kevin Coposky on April 15 without incident at his home in Old Bridge, according to a release through the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office on April 16.

The Old Bridge Police Department received a tip from a concerned citizen regarding Coposky attempting to meet children online for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. An investigation was conducted by Detective Ryan Hall of the Old Bridge Police Department, Detective Christopher Raub of the Sayreville Police Department and Detective Ken McGarry of the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit at the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Coposky is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Facility pending the results of a pre-trial detention hearing.

During the course of this ongoing investigation, it was determined that a self-identified vigilante group independently contacted the suspect and publicly disseminated information regarding Coposky’s conduct. These actions directly interfered with and impeded a sensitive and ongoing criminal investigation. As a result, investigators were impeded and thus, unable to fully develop and secure critical evidence to pursue the full scope of potential charges, according to the press release.

Law enforcement strongly discourages members of the public from engaging in the conduct attempted above. Such conduct can compromise investigations, hinder the pursuit of justice, place the safety of officers in jeopardy, and ultimately detract from law enforcement’s ability to hold offenders fully accountable.

As with all criminal conduct, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office remains committed to protecting victims and thoroughly investigating all allegations of this nature.

The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Hall of the Old Bridge Police Department at (732) 721-4000, Detective Raub of the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 727-4444 or Detective McGarry of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3140.
