Hopewell resident scammed out of $38,000

A victim lost $38,000 in a computer-related scam that was reported July 16, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.

The victim received an alert on their computer that stated the computer was frozen, police said. The victim was directed to call a phone number to fix the problem.

The victim called the phone number and was told to create a bitcoin account. The victim was told to deposit money into the account to purchase cryptocurrency, and was ultimately defrauded out of $38,000, police said.
