Students from Bear Tavern Elementary School got up close and personal with the Hopewell Township Police Department’s (HTPD) drone unit.

Township officers were able to teach students in a lesson outside about the drone technology, its uses, and how the department deploys the drones from their drone unit to aid police work and the community in a demonstration outside.

The police department’s drone unit helps the department in search and rescue efforts.

The drone unit was established in 2023 and is used not only in search and rescue efforts, but long-distance communications, accident reconstruction and general situational awareness, according to the police department.

The HTPD Drone Unit has three DJI drone models with a different purpose. They also have a Matrice 30T, medium size Mavic 3T, and two small Avata.

The drones have been deployed by the department for a host of calls including missing person searches, criminal investigations, crime scene documentation and building searches.
