East Windsor Township Mayor Janice Mironov will not seek a fifth term as the chairperson of the Mercer County Democratic Committee.
Mironov has served four successive terms, starting in 2018 when she succeeded Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds Jackson. She was reelected to a two-year term in 2020, 2022 and 2024.
A new chairperson will be chosen at the MCDC’s reorganization meeting on June 30.
The MCDC encourages grass-roots participation in the Democratic Party. It also seeks to recruit and support candidates to run in the Democratic Party political primary and in the November general election.
“An essential component of success is mentoring, encouraging, nominating and electing qualified individuals to best serve our communities and families,” Mironov said.
Mironov has pushed for young people — and especially women — to become involved in government. She was honored for those efforts when she was named one of five Outstanding Women in Municipal Government Award recipients in 2018.
She was elected to the East Windsor Township Council in 1995 and has served as mayor since 1996. The mayor is chosen from among the seven Township Council members to serve a one-year term. The mayor’s post is ceremonial.
Mironov grew up in Englewood and was active in student government in high school. She handed out fliers during political campaigns as a young person.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Wellesley College. She attended law school and graduated from the National Law Center at George Washington University.
Reflecting on her tenure as the MCDC chair, Mironov said she was honored by the trust that it had placed in her. She said she is proud of the progress and strides that have been achieved over her four terms leading the county committee.
During her tenure as MCDC chair, Mironov helped solidify Democratic Party dominance in Mercer County. The party’s candidates flipped Republican-held seats on the municipal governing bodies in Hopewell Borough, Hopewell Township, Hightstown Borough and Hamilton Township.
Mercer County also has become a Democratic Party stronghold. It is the only county in New Jersey where every elected official is a Democrat —from the municipal and county level to state and Congressional offices — with the exception of those who are elected in municipal nonpartisan races.
The West Windsor Township Council, the Robbinsville Township Council and the Trenton City Council are nonpartisan. Candidates do not run as Democrats or Republicans.
The state Senate and Assembly seats are held by Democrats in the 14th, 15th and 16th Legislative Districts.
The 14th Legislative District includes East Windsor Township, Hamilton Township, Hightstown Borough and Robbinsville Township. The 15th Legislative District includes Ewing Township, Hopewell Borough, Hopewell Township, Pennington Borough, Lawrence Township, the City of Trenton and West Windsor Township. The 16th District includes Princeton.
Mironov also oversaw the revival of the Mercer County Young Democrats and the Mercer County Latino Caucus. The Progressive Caucus also was incorporated in the MCDC.
“My primary interest has always been on government delivering to folks and on legislative policy engagement, all of which I continue to enjoy as mayor of East Windsor and my broader roles statewide,” said Mironov, who is a former president of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors and the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.
“I’m not going anywhere. I look forward to continuing to work with Gov. Mikie Sherrill in further building our Democratic Party and elevating government service and meaningful policies,” Mironov said.
