The Somerset County Department of Health invites adult residents who have type 2 diabetes to sign up for a free six-week workshop this winter entitled “Take Control of Your Health.” The program will provide individuals with skills and knowledge to assist them in taking an active role in managing their health or that of a loved one with type 2 diabetes.

“Those of us who live with or have a loved one with diabetes know the best way to manage its dangers is to weave it into every aspect of our lives,” said Commissioner Doug Singleterry, liaison to the Department of Health. “Participating in these workshops can help everyone impacted by type 2 diabetes get the knowledge, tips, and encouragement needed to make living a long and happy life with diabetes easier than ever.”

The workshops will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Somerset County Department of Health offices at 27 Warren Street in Somerville. The program will run weekly on Wednesday nights beginning on Jan. 29 and continuing through March 5.

Limited spots are available; advanced registration is required by Jan. 22. To learn more about the fun and motivating workshop and to register, contact health.educator@co.somerset.nj.us or call (908) 203-6072.

Course participants will learn techniques to better manage their symptoms of diabetes such as fatigue, pain, hyper-and hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear, and frustration. Participants will also learn strategies for exercising safely, healthy eating, talking with healthcare providers, and preventing or delaying diabetes complications.

Participants will receive a free book titled “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” a reference guide to further encourage a positive approach to self-management of chronic health conditions.
