Pennington Council members have authorized a request for proposals to conduct an architectural space study for the police department.

Borough Council approved the request for proposals (RFP), which asks qualified architectural firms to submit bids for a comprehensive spatial needs assessment and feasibility study, at the governing body’s Sept. 8 regular meeting.

The study will evaluate all options to address the police department’s building space limitations.

Options could potentially include renovations at Borough Hall or relocation.

Councilwoman Amy Kassler-Taub in a late August work session said there is a Part A and B.

“Part A is for investigation, discovery, and learn about our department and needs,” Kassler-Taub added. “If we choose to proceed, which is very clear we give ourselves the option in the RFP to proceed or not, then there is a phase two. Phase two would be conceptual studies and a more focused architectural study.”

She noted that the study would have cost a significant amount of money if they included it all in one phase.

In June, the Pennington Council amended a more than $1.14 million bond ordinance established in 2020 to fund improvements to borough hall.

There were still funds available from that particular bond ordinance which are being used to fund the spatial needs assessment and feasibility study for the police department.

The Pennington Police Department is located inside borough hall at 30 N Main St.

Borough Hall also contains an independent public library and a conference room that holds in-person meetings and serves at the municipal court.
