A Hawthorne Avenue resident was cheated out of $16,423.19 by a scammer who impersonated Amex security, according to the Princeton Police Department.
The victim reported that he had received a text message on July 9 allegedly from Amex Security stating that his account had been compromised.
The text message was followed up by a call to the victim’s cellphone by someone impersonating a member of the victim’s bank fraud investigation team. The victim was advised that $16,423.19 had been withdrawn from his account.
The victim gave the caller his online banking login credential. He was told to stay on speakerphone and go to a local bank and withdraw $16,423.19 from his account.
An unknown person came to the victim’s home and collected the money in the incident, which was reported on July 10.
